Bongyeong spear is a skewer used to probe the ground in search of poria cocos in the mountain, and was also called a poria cocos spear or a poria cocos skewer. It has a slim, long and sharp end and a T-shaped handle. Poria cocos, which is generally round or oval in shape, is a type of red-tipcoal mushroom that is a parasite on the roots of an old stump of a pine tree. When collecting poria cocos, it is necessary to find out exactly where it is. The mushroom picker would poke the skewer into the ground nearby pine tree roots, and locate poria cocos by its texture, which is different from the soil. When the location of poria cocos is identified, the mushroom picker would begin to dig into the ground using a hoe or a pickax.
