Butbal, or bamboo roll, is stationery designed to store but, or writing brushes. It was made by connecting split pieces of bush clover or bamboo. Since but was precious to those who learned and wrote calligraphy, it was stored with great care. Even in the house, but was stored in butbal to be protected from dust or other pollutants. But was placed in the butbal, which was rolled and then tied with a string. Pillang, a fabric pouch for writing brushes, was also used for the same purpose.
