The trilobites were a group of extinct arthropods that inhabited the marine environment during the Paleozoic Era. About 17,000 species have been documented from all continents to date. The body of the trilobite consisted of a cephalon, a thorax, and a pugudium, and was laterally divided into the axial region and two pleural regions.
