Satgat is a headgear for men of the Joseon Dynasty. It was made of bamboo strips or reeds into an umbrella shape to shield the wearer from rain or sunlight. Sat is an abbreviation of satjari, a word that originated from a gat hat made by weaving reeds like a mat. It is also called norip, nongrip, urip, or yarip. These hats are categorized based on the production material into a cattail satgat, a bamboo satgat, a thin bamboo strip satgat, and a paper satgat. The width of the hat was enough to cover the wearer’s face, and the hem was made in a hexagonal shape. A corded hoop was attached inside under the tip of the hat to secure the hat on the wearer’s head.
