Traditionally pockets were not built into clothing but worn underneath a woman’s garments and accessed through slits in her gown and petticoat. Usually worn in pairs on the hips, they could also be worn singly beneath an apron at one’s front. This pair is probably homemade and is embroidered with a trailing floral design, a popular motif for pockets.
