Joseon Dynasty

National Palace Museum of Korea

National Palace Museum of Korea
Seoul, South Korea

This inkstone is made of stones native to Wiwon, a region near the Amnokgang River in North Pyeongan Province. The left edge of the inkstone bears an expression of the back of the lotus leaf with veins and a stem, while the remaining large surface depicts the front of the leaf on which a pair of small catfish and a peony are placed in harmony. The surface of the wooden lid is decorated with five mother-of-pearl dragons flying through clouds.
