Onggu, or compost carrier, is a transportation tool used to carry grains, sand or ash, and was also called wongu, ongu, or onggi depending on the region. There were two types of compost carriers – one with a II-shaped wooden frame with a straw sack woven onto each side to droop down under the frame and carry the contents on both sides of the compost carrier. The inner side of the sack was woven to be longer than the outer side and wrapped around the bottom. When carrying the contents, the inner and outer panels were fastened with a pole to secure the contents, which were then released and poured out by pulling out the pole. It was generally used to carry food or manure. The other type was simply attached with a straw bag with an open bottom on each side, which were not woven onto the frame. The bag’s open bottom was tightened or attached with a board while carrying the contents. The contents were released by untying the bottom or pulling out the board, and this type of carrier was generally used to carry sand or ash. It was also used to transport harvested potatoes on the stem in mountainous regions.
