Side Dish Plate

Jaengcheop refers to a set of tableware for serving side dishes such as cooked vegetables, food boiled in sauce, and grilled dishes. It is designed to be smaller and flatter than bosigi, which is another type of side dish bowl, and its edge is concave so as to be covered with a lid. As with other tableware, this kind of side dish bowl is usually made of porcelain or brass. Those made of wood were mostly used by commoners. Jaengcheop is generally used to serve side dishes other than steamed rice, soup and sauces. The number of jaengcheop could vary and determine the type and name of bansang, or dining table. More jaengcheop on the table would signify a higher and more luxurious bansang.
