Gwangju Metropolitan City, South Korea

Kedai Bikin is an interior design studio that places its emphasis on designs based on the traditional culture of Malaysia, as well as local production using Malaysian materials. By continuously imparting contemporaneity to indigenous materials, techniques, and designs, Kedai Bikin produces products with the potential for contemporary usage, rather than outdated relics. Merdeka means “independence” in Malay, and this chair carries significant meaning as a legacy of the 60s and the modern history of Malaysia. This display showcases one original vintage Merdeka chair, a popular item in 1960s Malaysia, alongside nine Merdeka chairs in various colors and materials that reinterpreted the original in a modern way.
