Nam Gye-u (1811-1890) was a fifth-generation descendant of Nam Gu-man (1629-1711), a prime minister under King Sukjong (1661-1720) of Joseon. He earned himself the nickname "Nam Butterfly" because he painted mostly butterflies throughout his life. In this painting of his, an iris and lilies are painted on Chinese paper.
