Gum arabic

The usual medium of watercolour, gum arabic dissolves in water, but when the water has evaporated it binds the pigments of watercolour to the painting surface (usually paper). Gum arabic is obtained from a species of the acacia tree, the best examples coming from Sudan and Senegal.
