Amaravati is a city and the current de facto seat of government of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The city is located on the banks of river Krishna in Guntur District. The city has been proposed to be made the legislative capital of the state.
Amaravati was founded by former Chief minister of Andhra Pradesh N. Chandrababu Naidu in 2014 as the Greenfield Administrative Capital City of the residual state of Andhra Pradesh. The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone at a ceremonial event in Uddandarayunipalem village on 22 October 2015 at a public event.
The office of the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh has operated from Velagapudi since April 2016. The Andhra Pradesh Legislature remained in Hyderabad until March 2017, when it was relocated to newly constructed interim legislative buildings in Velagapudi.
