Taiyuan is the capital and largest city of Shanxi Province, People's Republic of China. It is one of the main manufacturing bases of China. Throughout its long history, Taiyuan was the capital or provisional capital of many dynasties in China, hence the name Lóngchéng.
As of the 2020 census, its total population was 5,304,161 inhabitants whom 4,529,141 lived in the 6 urban districts. However,5,433,659 lived in the built-up area made of these 6 districts plus Yuci district in Jinzhong City, largely conurbated.
Taiyuan is located roughly in the centre of Shanxi, with the Fen River flowing through the central city. Taiyuan is also a major city, appearing among the top 500 cities in the world by scientific research outputs, as tracked by the Nature Index and home to Taiyuan University of Technology, the key universities in China and other public universities including Shanxi University, Taiyuan University of Science and Technology and North University of China.
