Material, technically known as dentine, from which the teeth of elephants and other mammals are mainly composed. It is similar in appearance to bone and is chemically indistinguishable from it. When freshly cut it is creamy white in colour and displays a variety of grain patterns in transverse or longitudinal section depending on the type of animal from which it was derived.
