Slate

A metamorphic rock normally used for roofing, but also sometimes for sculpture, for example in Genoa. On rare occasions it was also used by 16th- and 17th-century artists as a painting surface (for example by Sebastiano del Piombo and, for his altarpiece for the Chiesa Nuova in Rome, by Rubens).
