Starting August 27, Pinacoteca de São Paulo – the art museum of the São Paulo State Secretariat of Culture – hosts the exhibit titled “Arte no Brasil: Uma história na Pinacoteca de São Paulo. Vanguarda brasileira dos anos 1960 – Coleção Roger Wright” [“Art in Brazil: A history at Pinacoteca de São Paulo. Brazilian avant-garde of the 1960s – Roger Wright Collection”], a sampling of 80 works made in the 1960s and 1970s in Brazil by the most representative artists of the new figuration, of the political content, and of the colorful explosion of pop, such as Wesley Duke Lee, Claudio Tozzi, Antonio Dias, Cildo Meireles, Nelson Leirner, Raymundo Colares, Rubens Gerchman, and Carlos Zilio, among others.The long-term show celebrates the loan-for-use of 178 works, established in March 2015 between the São Paulo State Secretariat of Culture, the Pinacoteca, and Associação Cultural Goivos, responsible for the Roger Wright collection. Additionally, it also continues the narrative that started with the exhibit “Arte no Brasil,” on view on the second floor, which presents the development of the history of art in Brazil from the colonial period to the early years of modernism in the 1920s.“With this collection, the museum offers visitors the chance to see and comprehend recent processes that contributed to the formation of Brazilian visuality. Not to mention that the Pinacoteca is firmly established as a national museum of the history of art in Brazil, consisting of centers articulated in an extensive and representative narrative,” explains José Augusto Ribeiro, curator of the exhibit.The show will run through August 26, 2019, on the 1st floor of the Pinacoteca – located at Praça da Luz, 2. Admission is open on Wednesday through Monday from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm, and visitors are allowed to remain until 6:00 pm. Tickets cost R$ 6 (full price) and R$ 3 (half-price for students, seniors, etc.). Admission is free-of-charge for children under 10 and adults over 60. On Saturdays, admission is free for all visitors.The exhibit is sponsored by Pirelli, Klabin, and Credit Suisse, through cultural incentive laws. It was made possible also thanks to the direct support from personal friends of collector Roger Wright, such as Paul S.C. Galvão Filho and José Olympio da Veiga Pereira.LOAN-FOR-USEThe collection represents Brazilian production from the 1960s and has important installations produced starting in the year 2000. It was set up by Roger Wright and his two sons in 1996, and after the airplane accident that killed the family in 2011, Christopher and Ellen Mouravieff-Apostol, Roger Wright’s brother and mother, decided to keep the works on Brazilian soil. Accordingly, they consulted various Brazilian museums, trying to find one that presented complete and secure conditions for research, communication, safeguard, and public projection.“I am very happy with the prospect of opening the collection to the public at the Pinacoteca. Above all, I’m sure that both Roger and the children would be proud of this new direction in the history of the collection that they compiled with such dedication,” said Christopher.The Pinacoteca has experience in hosting works of great importance through loans-for-use, such as the Brasiliana Collection – Fundação Estudar, which – after the loan period – were donated to the museum and today make up its permanent collection, and the loan-for-use signed in 2004 with Fundação Nemirovsky featuring major works of the modernist period.
