The exhibition is broken down into a number of different sections exploring various aspects of the Jewish world's relationship with fabrics and textiles for both religious and secular use, up to and including fashion and business in the 20th centuryThe exhibition's underlying concept embraces a vast social and cultural context in which art and history are both symbolically and tangibly interwoven in the warp and weft of the exhibits. This triumph of fabrics will be showcased in a multi-faceted display of eight sections beginning with the days of the High Priest Aaron and reaching right up to 20th century fashions and to the contemporary textile business via such themes as the role of writing as an ornamental motif, the use of textiles to adorn synagogues, embroidery as secret labour and the role of women. The exhibition will also explore the role of fabric as a social statement by Jewish communities' wealthier classes, who showed no hesitation in adding their coats-of-arms to the furnishings that they commissioned for the synagogues, their commercial and family ties with other Mediterranean countries and the resulting cross-contamination in the style of the items produced. A fascinating section will also explore the emancipation of Jews in the 19th century and their role both as artists and as outstanding collectors of fabrics and textiles ultimately responsible for the burgeoning interest in the study of what had been a hitherto largely neglected field. The exhibition is curated by Dora Liscia Bemporad and Olga Melasecchi.
