Edouard Vuillard believed that producing prints or posters was just as important as creating paintings. The French artist could spend up to three years designing a final print. Follow Vuillard’s journey, from proof to perfection.

From Proof to Perfection: Edouard Vuillard’s print series 'Paysages et Intérieurs' The print series Paysages et Intérieurs is one of the highlights of the oeuvre of French artist Edouard Vuillard (1868-1940). Vuillard was part of the Nabis, a group of young peintres-graveurs (painter-printmakers). The group viewed works on paper, such as prints and posters, as works of art in their own right, while the traditional art world only considered paintings to be art.

Paysages et Intérieurs consists of 13 colour lithographs, which offer a glimpse into Vuillard’s private world. The prints show his family and friends in their Parisian apartments, or places in the city where Vuillard enjoyed walking. By emphasising decorative patterns, Vuillard dissociated his work from the visible reality, while retaining the intimate character – precisely what makes this series of prints so unique.

Collaboration with the Rietveld Academie Eighteen students from the Graphic Design Department at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie drew inspiration from this print series to create modern versions of the wallpaper patterns
