Primavera: Young Australian Artists showcases the work of Australian artists aged 35 years and under. In its 33rd year, curator Lucy Latella brings together five artists who consider the possibilities of cultural connection in the face of social, political and geographical challenges. Through acts of exchange with family, community and technology, Teresa Busuttil (SA), Chun Yin Rainbow Chan (陳雋然) (VIC), Aidan Hartshorn (ACT), Monica Rani Rudhar (NSW) and Sarah Ujmaia (VIC) question how cultural identities are shaped and held, and how they continue to evolve with each generation.
Primavera was initiated in 1992 by the MCA in collaboration with Dr Edward Jackson AM and Mrs Cynthia Jackson AM, in memory of their daughter Belinda. Since its inception, Primavera has played an influential role in the development of contemporary art in Australia, introducing a generation of artists at an early stage of their careers to a broader public. Each year the curator of Primavera undertakes extensive research, meeting with young artists from across the country.
Primavera 2024: Young Australian Artists is kindly supported by Gordon and Tasmin Jackson and MCA Next; the Museum’s program for young philanthropists.
“ The artists in Primavera 2024 draw on a range of media to connect with their culture, community and family, and bring to the fore that which has been concealed or overlooked. Their diverse works highlight that culture isn’t simply inherited, but formed in the present. Lucy Latella
