The Republic of Venice had been hit by countless moments of crisis and rifts, but it also picked itself up just as many times as it was set back and managed to regenerate and revive. The history of Venice, in other words, is marked by multiple births and rebirths, fine examples of how the city has always been able to face the challenges posed by the changing times. The exhibition VENETIA 1600. Births and rebirths at Doge’s Palace offers an unprecedented reading of the history of the Serenissima that identifies an innovative interpretative model with its concept of birth and rebirth to decipher its past, for reflecting on a possible, optimistic future of the city. To illustrate the most outstanding moments of the history and identity of Venice, the exhibition will exhibit works by some of the greatest artists, architects and men of letters who worked in the lagoon over the past millennium. The exhibition will include important paintings by Carpaccio, Tiziano, Tiepolo, Canaletto, Guardi and many others, as well as a selection of miniatures, drawings, fabrics, sculptures, ceramics, architectural models, glass and everyday objects. Particular attention will be given to some of the most representative monuments in the city, such as the church of San Giacomo di Rialto, St. Mark’s Basilica, the Rialto Bridge, the Fondaco dei Tedeschi, the Doge’s Palace, the churches of the Redentore and Santa Maria della Salute, the Gran Teatro La Fenice theatre and the Bell Tower of St. Mark’s Square, up to and including the major museums and cultural institutions of contemporary Venice. In addition to the great masterpieces from Italian museums and private collections, the exhibition aims to enhance the rich historical, artistic and cultural heritage from local museums, libraries and archives, first of all that of the collections of the Musei Civici di Venezia.
