With Notre Dame’s restoration nearing completion, this exhibition of drawings focuses on artists’ enthusiasm for cathedrals in the 19th century. These artists charted their path in the wake of Victor Hugo and the architect Eugène Viollet-Le-Duc, whose restorations conjured up a new image of the Middle Ages. Through the prism of the picturesque and the sublime, among other things, they took a fresh look at the majesty of these edifices, places of history, religion and memory.
