Gond Artists

The success and international fame of a Gond artist such as Jangarh Singh Shyam amplified after his tragic death in Japan in 2001. Art lovers and collectors across the world came to realize the treasure they had lost. A host of young men and women from his community aspired to develop their own artistic proclivities and follow their own paths to fame and success. Each began hesitantly and understood they had to develop their own recognizable Gond style and refine their work as they went along.

Nankushiya Shyam, Jangarh’s widow, and her two children now proudly carry his art tradition forward.

This was followed by a series of internationally acclaimed works of art and publications in which other practitioners of Gond art like Venkat Raman Singh Shyam, Suresh Dhurve, Bhajju Shyam, Durga Bai, Anand Singh Shyam and his wife Kalabai Shyam, Ram Singh Urveti, Dalip Singh Tekam, Kaushal Prasad Tikam, and Dhavat Uike became well-known.
