Zeitgenössische Kunst in Wittenberg, Berlin und Kassel. Freiheit hinter Gittern: 66 internationale Künstler verwandeln das Alte Gefängnis in Wittenberg zum Museum auf Zeit. Sonderpräsentationen in zwei Kirchen in Berlin und Kassel ergänzen die zentrale Ausstellung.
Über die Ausstellung
Luther hat die Welt verändert. Wer verändert sie heute? Welche Rolle haben die Künstler? Eine aktuelle Bestandsaufnahme der Kunst zu den Themen unserer Zeit. 70 internationale Künstler zeigen ihren Blick auf Freiheit, Individualität, Religion und soziale Konfliktfelder. Internationale Gegenwartskunst trifft auf das ‚geistige Modell‘ Luther: Das ist der Ausgangspunkt der Ausstellung „Luther und die Avantgarde“, die die Stiftung für Kunst und Kultur e.V. in Kooperation mit dem Reformationsjubiläum 2017 e.V. 500 Jahre nach Luthers Thesenanschlag präsentiert. Der Reformator steht nicht als historische Person im Vordergrund, sondern als Vordenker und Avantgardist seiner Zeit. Zentraler Ausstellungsort ist das Alte Gefängnis in Wittenberg, das eigens für die Ausstellung in Stand gesetzt und öffentlich zugänglich gemacht wird. Die Künstlerinnen und Künstler setzen sich mit impulsgebenden Gedanken der Reformation auseinander, die bis heute nicht an Aktualität verloren haben. Zentrale Begriffe sind Haltung, Streben nach Veränderung und Verantwortung. Gezeigt werden u.a. Arbeiten von Eija-Liisa Athila, Ólafur Elíasson, Ayşe Erkmen, Isa Genzken, Diango Hernández, Christian Jankowski, Mischa Kuball, Antje Majewski, Sebastian Riemer, Pascale Marthine Tayou, Günther Uecker, Erwin Wurm oder Zhang Peili. Weitere Standorte der Ausstellung sind die St. Matthäus-Kirche in Berlin mit einer Arbeit von Gilbert & George sowie die Karlskirche in Kassel mit Positionen von Shilpa Gupta und Thomas Kilpper. „Luther und die Avantgarde“ ist Teil der Weltausstellung Reformation.
