Dastkari Haat Samiti
Located 20 km from Kohima, the capital city of Nagaland, is the village of Khonoma. Inhabited by the Angami Naga tribe, the village is legendary for its valorous resistance to British colonial rule in the 19th century. More recently, it is known for another kind of heroic resistance - for natural conservation. In 1988, the Village Council declared 2000 ha (20 sq km) of its land as protected forest, notifying it as the Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary. It also banned hunting, not just in the Sanctuary, but in the entire village, extending over 125 sq km. This was a revolutionary call for a society where hunting is a way of life.

The trees are not cut, but pollarded, yielding wood for fuel and light construction.
They additionally perform the task of nitrogen fixing. After the fallow period the plots are cultivated again.

Each family also has shifting cultivation or jhum plots at the edge of the forest.
Here, a variety of crops is grown (potato, soya bean, garlic, ginger, chillies and a host of vegetables) along with Alder trees.

Wood is the primary fuel used in homes. It is common to see stock piles of wood in the village.
A fixed amount of wood is permitted to each family for its annual needs, and no felling or commercial logging is allowed beyond this.

Hunting has traditionally been very much a part of the Naga way of life. It was a radical step for the Village Council to ban hunting.
Homes and community houses are still decorated with trophies, considered symbols of valour and skill.

Once constructed of mud and bamboo, village homes are now mostly made of brick and concrete, with tin roofs.
However, local natural materials like bamboo continue to be used for various purposes.

Traditional community institutions continue to have a place in people’s lives. The ‘Age-group House’ is one such, where a family becomes the anchor to organise a certain age group for community events. Members of each Age-group take responsibility for particular functions on community occasions, thus ensuring participation of everyone in the village.
