West Side Story Cast - 60 Years Later

The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts

A Selection of Interviews with West Side Story Original Broadway Cast.

Martin Charnin, who originally played the Jet named "Big Deal" (who wears the glasses and the brimmed hat), went on to become the director and lyricist of the musical Annie and many other Broadway shows. Charnin is directing an upcoming documentary which includes interviews with most of the surviving members of the cast and creative team.

Carmen Gutierrez, who played Teresita in the original cast of West Side Story, remembers her audition for the new musical.

Grover Dale, who played Snow Boy (one of the Jets) in the original production, teaches the opening number to a dance class.

Carol Lawrence remembers the photo shoot for the iconic image of Maria and Tony running down the street.
