My Daily Herald is an experiment by Google Arts & Culture Lab Artist in residence, Gaël Hugo, allowing users to explore new connections between notable moments in British history and curate their own personalized edition of the Daily Herald.

The Daily Herald was once the world's top selling newspaper, and its vast archive is held at the National Science and Media Museum. For decades, the only way to understand this unique record of local, national and international events was to read the small printed texts associated with each photograph. For the first time, image descriptions from this unique photojournalism archive have been digitized using Optical Character Recognition (OCR), and organized using Natural Language Processing. This process makes the original typewritten and handwritten texts accessible to all. Efforts have been made to maintain the authentic typesetting as much as possible, including the use of all caps and sentence cases by the original author.
