Google Arts & Culture Artist in residence, Jack Wild, was curious to see if Gemini could help surface intriguing information hidden within the Google Arts & Culture collection and tailor it to people’s interest areas.

The process began by identifying specific art movements to focus on. The Google Arts & Culture archive was then queried for relevant materials, prioritising movements with ample source data. This data was provided to Gemini’s context window. For each movement and topic combination, a prompt was crafted, instructing Gemini to draft a guide. For example, for the one-minute guide to Impressionism for foodies, the prompt was: “Using the above texts as your sources, write a short guide to [food and drink] in [the art movement Impressionism] using examples of specific works, artists, or creators.”

Gemini was provided with system instructions and examples to guide the writing style. The generated guides underwent manual fact-checking and edited for accuracy. The guide texts to Gemini with a request to identify any mentions of specific artworks, artists, and potential topics of interest. Finally, for each of the artworks, artists, and topics of interest identified, we searched the Google Arts & Culture archive for relevant content.
