Your Journey
Soaring summer temperatures don't bother Ernest Swanker as he wades through a chilling fog produced by 320 degrees-below-zero liquid nitrogen at the General Electric Research Laboratory. The refreshing mist appears as the numbing liquid meets the atmosphere on its way from the large steel storage sphere to portable containers. Swanker fills some 50 of the insulated cans a day so supplies of the liquid can be trucked to laboratory buildings for use in quick cooling of test solutions and materials. The job keeps Swanker in the cooling fog about three hours a day. Only catch is that Swanker has the job in the winter
