A perfect crystal of pure iron, a hundred times stronger than any previously known metallic crystal, is shown as viewed through a microscope. The crystal, a "whisker" a thousandth of an inch thick, is seen between an ordinary pinhead (left) and a tiny tool for manipulating. These crystals, produced by scientist in the General Electric Research Laboratory here, represent the first time that metals have been made as strong as theory predicts they should be. Top GE research official Dr. C. G. Suits foresees that important practical results may come in time from their study.
