Created by Colbert in 1666, the Academy des sciences is an assembly of scientists, chosen from among the most eminent French and foreign specialists. The reflections and debates it conducts have the role of providing everyone with a framework of expertise, advice and alertness, vis-à-vis the major political, ethical and societal challenges posed by science. By virtue of this mission, it works to share science as a common good to inform the choices of citizens, and makes recommendations, on which the government authorities can rely. It also supports research, commits to the quality of science education and promotes scientific life internationally.
