B & M Theocharakis Foundation for the Fine Arts and Music
Athina, Greece

The B & M Theocharakis Foundation for the Fine Arts and Music was founded as a non-profit-making foundation for the public good in 2004 and ratified by Presidential Decree.

Our Mission
The B & M Theocharakis Foundation is primarily concerned with music and the fine arts in Greece and internationally, with a focus on the emergence of the Modern and its continued development over the 20th and into the 21st century.

The Foundation aims to encourage the public to enter into a wide-ranging and interdisciplinary dialogue with music and the visual arts, to promote the work of Greek artists abroad, to employ every means at its disposal to disseminate the content of its activities, and to develop networks facilitating collaboration and exchange.

The Foundation seeks to achieve its aims by staging periodical exhibitions, concerts, lectures, seminars and other activities. It will also sponsor educational and academic research, along with programmes and studies of relevance to its aims.

Special emphasis is placed on attracting younger visitors, familiarizing them with music and the visual arts, cultivating their aesthetic sensibilities and making them feel at ease in a museum context.

The Founders
Basil and Marina Theocharakis are the inspiration and the driving force behind the Foundation. Basil Theocharakis is a multifaceted personality. At the helm of a dynamic and diversified group of companies, he is involved in the automobile industry, banking, construction, health care, cosmetics, digital systems and shipping.

However, painting is an equally important dimension in his life. He attended the studio of the great Greek artist Spyros Papaloukas in tandem with his studies in the Law, and exhibited his work for the first time in 1957 at the International Youth Festival in Moscow. He has shown his work on many occasions since, both in Greece and abroad, and works of his are held by several major public and private collections. Declared a Chevalier de la Légion d’ Honneur by the government of France for his services to art, he has also been acclaimed as an Archon Chartoularios by the Ecumenical Patriarch.

Marina Theocharakis has been actively involved in the arts for many years through the organizing of high-quality events and publications.

The Foundation is an expression of Basil and Marina Theocharakis’ desire to contribute to the world of art and music in a manner that transcends their individual active involvement in the arts.
