Batalha Monastery is the most important Portuguese gothic building and quite a prominent one in the Iberian Peninsula and Europe. It is also the cradle of manueline architecture. The monastery was first listed as National Monument in 1907 and 1910, and as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983. The service called Mosteiro da Batalha belongs to Direção-Geral do Património Cultural (Directorate General for Cultural Heritage) which is part of the Portuguese Ministry of Culture and responsible for making the monument available to the public along with visitor facilities, information and activities as well as for the maintenance of the building and corresponding collections.
