The Bonnefantenmuseum offers three floors for collection presentations and distinctive temporary exhibitions. The museum has a diverse collection of old masters and a collection of modern and contemporary art. The old masters on display include works by mediaeval sculptor Jan van Steffeswert, and early Netherlandish and Italian paintings. The modern and contemporary art collections consist of artworks by internationally renowned artists, with a historically grown focus on movements such as Concept Art, Minimal Art and Arte Povera. The museum is also committed to artists working in the region around Maastricht. The Bonnefantenmuseum was designed by the Italian architect Aldo Rossi. The building is a splendid addition to the skyline of Maastricht, along the river Meuse. Featuring the monumental Treppenstraße (stairs) that leads to the exhibition rooms and to the Cupola- tower, its undisputed highlight.
