The origin of the collections and cabinets of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the UCM is linked to that of the Faculty itself, since it was created in 1978 as a result of the integrating the San Fernando Higher School of Fine Arts into Spanish university studies.
Some of the heritage comes from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, which gave part of its artworks to the School of Fine Arts (which is nowadays the Faculty), when it became a separate institution. Although other art pieces come from donations, most of the heritage is the result of compilated graduate’s works, valuable documents that help teachers in their daily work. Both in terms of number and quality, the collections can be considered to be between the most important owned by universities worldwide. All these pieces collected over the years introduce us to the complex world of art research, and serve as testimony of some of the work carried out in the Faculty of Fine Arts. Through them we can discover the history of the institution and witness its journey through time.
