Brazil

Under the curation of the Network of Black Historians and Historian, Geledés – Black Women's Institute, in partnership with Acervo Cultne and Google Arts & Culture, is launching the virtual exhibition project “Nossas Histórias: vidas, lutas e saberes da gente negra” (Our Stories: lives, struggles, and knowledge of Black people). This action is understood as a way to reposition the excellent academic research produced by Black female historians and Black male historians about the most diverse themes involving people of African descent in Brazil and the world. The project, like other initiatives we have been developing, seeks to meet the purposes of re-educating ethnic-racial relations and anti-racist historical literacy.

The first exhibition in the series aims for an understanding of November 20th as the National Day of Black Consciousness and will be complete on this platform by December. The six “virtual rooms” will present information ranging from the memory practices of Black people in the 19th century to the reflections of intellectual activists who played a leading role in the nationalization of the commemorative date of the Quilombola struggle. By November 2021, a monthly average of two virtual exhibition panels will be presented, with varied themes such as individual and collective trajectories of Black women and men; revolts of enslaved, freed, and free Black people; Black abolitionisms; Black intellectualities; Black press; Black associations; history of the Black presence in neglected territories (such as the Federal District, Goiás, Pará, Rio Grande do Sul, and Santa Catarina); transnational histories in the Black Atlantic; memories and histories of Black families, among others.

We hope to contribute to the naturalization of the presence of Black female historians and Black male historians as legitimate subjects for the updates of historical analyses in Brazil and the world.
