Czech Republic and Slovak Republic - Biennale Arte 2015
Venice, Italy

The Czechoslovak Pavilion in Venice was completed and formally opened at the 15th Venice Biennale in 1926. Pavilion architect Otakar Novotný (1880 -1959) is considered one of the founders of modern Czech architecture. The pavilion is a simple rectangle with a single central hall and two adjacent small rooms for maintenance staff. The main light source is a large roof window., under which a dispersive velarium is suspended. Presently, the only facade decoration is a monumental red marble portico, in which a copper-covered gate with rondocubist decoration is set, all crowned by the simple high-relief inscription Cecoslovacchia.
