The Miran Jarc Public Library is a central regional library for Dolenjska, Bela krajina and Posavje and is one of the Slovenian Public Libraries that boasts an exceptionally rich collection of local studies material and older rare and valuable books and non-book material, kept in the Local Studies Department and in the Special Collections of Bogo Komelj.
The cultural treasure house is part of what has always made the Novo mesto library recognizable throughout Slovenia. In the years since the library was founded in 1946, the special collections have increased to well over a hundred thousand units. The extensive collection includes manuscripts, book rarities, book illustrations, prints, paintings, old postcards, photographs, ex-librises, WW2 related publications, valuable cartographic material, manuscript music, commemorative objects and furniture.
The library facility comprises of two over 300-year-old buildings and a new extension. In the place of one building there used to be Martin's church until 1779, the origins of this church date back to Middle ages, which is evidenced by the year carved in stone at the entrance.
