Throughout its history, the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum has developed an exemplary model in which citizens, the local artistic community and public institutions have determined the configuration of an important collection. Its origin lies in the first Museum of Fine Arts, founded in 1908 and which opened its doors in 1914, and in the Museum of Modern Art, inaugurated in 1924. The two joined in 1945, the year in which the old building was erected. In 1970 the modern building was added, and in 2001 a significant reform shaped its current physiognomy.
This centennial history of continuous growth and updating is now facing a new horizon with the Agravitas expansion project, by architects Norman Foster and Luis María Uriarte.
An essential tour of the collection includes unique works by Lucas Cranach the Elder, Maerten de Vos, El Greco, Orazio Gentileschi, Sofonisba Anguissola, Jusepe de Ribera, Francisco de Zurbarán, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, Mary Cassatt, Francisco de Goya, Paul Gauguin, Ignacio Zuloaga, Francis Bacon, Eduardo Chillida, Antoni Tápies, Richard Serra, Cristina Iglesias or Miquel Barceló.
