The Nara Prefectural Museum of Art first opened its doors in 1973 after a donation from Japanese-style painter Yoshikawa Kanpõ’s personal collection. Henceforth, pieces of outstanding quality dating from Japan’s early modern to present era, as well as those with a profound connection to Nara have been collected, and the museum now currently possesses an assortment of works totaling approximately 4,100 pieces. With said collecting as well as extensive ongoing research as a base, the Nara Prefectural Museum of Art carries out a wide variety of exhibitions and other activities with an interest in promoting the arts and culture of Nara. Now and in the future, we would like to work all the more diligently to be an art museum that is loved and befriended by many.
