The gallery was established as an independent institution in 1953. From the very beginning of its existence, the Liberec gallery has been one of the important cultural institutions of the city. After the end of the Second World War, its headquarters was the Villa of Johann Liebieg the Younger (Liebieg Palace). From the 1870s, where the collections of the art department of the North Bohemian Museum were moved and the entire building was sensitively modified for the needs of the gallery during the following decades.
