This is a foundation established by Ganesh Shivaswamy, a lawyer from Bengaluru, to showcase the passion of individual collectors through their cherished collections. The Foundation recognizes that private collections greatly differ from public collections, in that individual collectors infuse into these collections unique personal experiences. These collections are more fragile than institutional collections as they are more vulnerable to dispersal and destruction after the lifetime of the collector. It is therefore exceedingly important to collect, preserve and showcase these collections.
The Ganesh Shivaswamy Foundation has embarked on cataloging and curating the works of artists like Raja Ravi Varma, the chromolithographs from the Ravi Varma Press, the contemporaries of Raja Ravi Varma like M V Dhurandhar, C Raja Raja Varma and the later Popular Artists like C Kondiah Raju, K Madhavan, S M Pandit, etc.
The Google Arts and Culture platform of the Foundation was launched on September 21, 2019 by Her Highness Shubhangini Raje, Rajamata Ji of Baroda.
The logo of the Foundation is replete with symbolism. The capital letter 'G' is stylized like a swan (hamsa) which is the vehicle (vahan) of Saraswati- the Hindu Goddess of learning. The base of the swan is the symbol of infinity which represents the intellect which is infinite in nature. The Ganesh Shivaswamy Foundation is structured like an arch supported by academia from within.
