The Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon

The Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon
Barnstaple, United Kingdom

Housed in a prominent Grade II listed building on the square, the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon
collections originate from the Literary and Scientific Institution and the North Devon Athenaeum. Founded by philanthropist and benefactor William Frederick Rock as a free library and museum for the people of North Devon.

Our collections include significant mineral and geology, one of the finest collections of North Devon Pottery and an arts and crafts collection including furniture maker, Shapland and Petter. The museum is also home to the military collections of the Royal Devon Yeomanry and holds collections from the Devonshire Regiment.

Through funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund we will be shortly opening our new Long Bridge Wing Extension which will include a new social history gallery, two temporary exhibition spaces and a designated learning room. Continuing Mr Rock's ideals the galleries will promote learning and tell the stories of the people and landscapes of North Devon.

Entry is free and we hold an annual programme of events for adults, families and young people. Please check our website for details.
