The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (MOMAT) is Japan’s first national art museum located in central Tokyo, near the Imperial Palace.

The main feature of the MOMAT is one of the largest collection in Japan comprising more than 13,000 items including National Important Cultural Properties. It houses many Japanese masterpieces in various genres from the end of the 19th century to the present including works from abroad. In a turbulent age of Japan’s rapid modernization, artists continued to search for truly epoch-making expression between the traditional Japanese sense of beauty and a different culture in Western art. What masterpieces were created by their efforts? The MOMAT Collection in the collection galleries on the fourth to second floors presents in each exhibition period 200 pieces selected from our collection. It is the only exhibition in Japan giving you an insight into Japanese art over more than a century at a single stroke.

Special thematic exhibitions featuring Japanese and overseas art are given several times a year in the gallery on the first floor. “A Room With a View” relaxation space offers a must-see view. Near the MOMAT are the Imperial Palace, Kitanomaru Park and Chidorigafuchi where visitors can enjoy Japanese culture and rich natural surroundings. These are ones of Japan’s most renowned places for cherry blossoms that attract large crowds every spring, creating a spectacular atmosphere in the entire neighborhoods. Located within walking distance of Tokyo Station, a stroll around the area and a visit to the MOMAT would be an exciting combination throughout the year.
