VMFA’s permanent collection encompasses nearly 50,000 works of art spanning 6,000 years of world history. Its collections include Art Nouveau and Art Deco, English silver, Fabergé, and the art of South Asia, along with acclaimed holdings in American, British Sporting, Impressionist and Post-Impressionist, and Modern and Contemporary art – and additional strengths in African, Ancient, East Asian, and European.
Founded in 1936, VMFA is a state-supported, privately endowed educational institution created for the benefit of the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Its purpose is to collect, preserve, exhibit, and interpret art, to encourage the study of the arts, and thus to enrich the lives of all.
