Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University

Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University
New Brunswick, United States

The Zimmerli Art Museum is one of the largest and most distinguished university-based art museums in the nation. The museum’s collection includes more than 60,000 works, ranging from ancient to contemporary art, with particular emphasis on nineteenth-century French art; Russian art from icons to avant-garde material; Soviet nonconformist art from the Dodge collection; and American art with notable holdings of prints. Founded in 1966, the Zimmerli occupies a 70,000-square-foot facility on the New Brunswick campus of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Established in 1766, Rutgers is America’s eighth oldest institution of higher learning and a premier research university. The Zimmerli’s exhibition calendar is global in its perspective. Each year the museum presents two large exhibitions that survey a particular theme or movement in art, or focus on the work of particular artists, especially women artists. The museum also presents a series of four or five smaller cameo shows each year which highlight the Zimmerli’s permanent holdings. The museum’s programs are interdisciplinary in their approach and offer a wide variety of educational opportunities for the university community, as well as audiences of all ages. Interactive guided tours of the museum’s collection and special exhibitions are offered in English, French, Spanish, German, and Russian.
