Hohenzollern Crypt at the Berlin Cathedral
You may have visited the city's cathedral on Museum Island, and you may have marvelled at its neoclassical interior ornament, but did you know that it's also the final resting place of nearly 100 members of the noble House of Hohenzollern, including a few kings?

Pergamon Museum
Not far from the cathedral is the Pergamon Museum. Inside, you'll find archaeological wonders collected from across the Mediterranean, but the highlight has to be The Pergamon Altar - an entire ancient Greek temple, excavated in Turkey and reconstructed here.

Tieranatomisches Theater
Looking up at this decorated ceiling, it's easy to think we're in another of the city's historic churches. We're actually on the dissecting table of the Veterinary Anatomy Theatre. In the 1800s, students would have watched as cows and horses were cut open in the name of science.

Teufelsberg
On the heights of Teufelsberg, you can visit one of the relics of Berlin's recent history. This building, topped by distinctive radio domes, was a US spy station, built during the Cold War to listen in to Soviet communications on the other side of the Iron Curtain.

With the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the USSR, the station fell out of use, and into the hands of squatters, who turned it into a party palace. Today, you're more likely to find travellers taking tours of the crumbling structure than any defecting agents.

Fliegeberg
On the south side of the city is another hill with an interesting history. The Fliegeberg was built in 1894 by the flight pioneer Otto Lilienthal to test gliders. Lilienthal made some extraordinary and inventive leaps, but sadly didn't live to see his dream of powered flight.

Pfaueninsel
On the outskirts of the city is the Pfaueninsel, or Peacock Island. Over the centuries its been a popular destination for day trippers. It used to house a pleasure palace, a palm house, and a royal menagerie. These days, it's a nature reserve, and the peacocks are free-range.

Badeschiff
The River Spree might be cold… and dirty… but you can always take a dip at Badeschiff. This floating, filtered, heated pool allows you to enjoy a splash in the city, without any worries. There's also an open-air bar and areas for massages, so you can really relax.
