Aurora, Texas, USA, 1897

A few months before the US publication of H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds, an event stranger than fiction occurrs in the small town of Aurora, Texas, when a craft plummets from the sky. The pilot is said to be 'not of this world', yet is laid to rest in the town's cemetery.

Ängelholm, Sweden, 1946

On the 18 May 1946, almost a year after the end of the Second World War, Gösta Karlsson of Ängelholm, Sweden, reports seeing a flying saucer and its alien passengers land in the woods of  Kronoskogen. Today, a concrete model of the spacecraft stands at the site.

Mount Rainer, Washington, USA, 1947

This was the sighting that started it all. Accomplished pilot Kenneth Arnold was flying his CallAir A2 near Mount Rainer, Washington, when he spotted disc-shaped objects moving at a tremendous speed (he estimated 1,932 km/h). The press quickly dubbed these UFOs 'flying saucers'.

Roswell, New Mexico, USA, 1947

Barely two weeks later, W.W. 'Mac' Brazel hears about Arnold's story, and recalls that he had found the crumpled silvery remains of an aircraft scattered over his ranch near Roswell, New Mexico. The finds are gathered and quickly taken to  Fort Worth Army Air Field for analysis.

Florence, Italy, 1954

The Cold War is in full swing, and UFOs are a world phenomenon. On November 27, 1954, a soccer game is interrupted in Florence, Italy, when a group of high-speed cigar-shaped UFOs pause and hover above the Stadio Artemio Franchi. The crowd is said to fall silent at the sight.

A farmer in Emilcin, Poland, says he was abducted and medically examined by short, green-faced, humanoid beings, speaking an unearthly language. Their craft is pure white, smooth, and hums as it hovers. At the time, the media ignores him, but there is now a memorial at the site.

Dechmont Law, Scotland, 1979

Forester Robert Taylor returns home to his wife bloodied, his clothes torn, saying that a 'flying dome' had tried to abduct him. The dome was 'a dark metallic material with a rough texture like sandpaper' and smelled like 'burning brakes'. The police find no leads.
