A soundtrack of the times

As the world was emerging from the effects of the Covid 19 pandemic, the shockwaves of the death of George Floyd were still being felt and the Trump administration was drawing to a close, the messages of Marvin Gaye's seminal album felt more prescient than ever.

Acclaimed British soul singer Noel McKoy joined the tour on lead vocals as the voice of Marvin Gaye himself. Sadly Noel passed away on 3 November 2022 and, whilst he had worked extensively with Jazz Jamaica, this was his only tour with Nu Civilisation Orchestra. An experienced and generous musician, he is still sorely missed.

“Since the time of the release of the album to the present day, every time I’ve heard or sung it I think to myself that mothers are actually still crying –  ever more so, and young brothers are still dying.  The tracks from this album were and still are the benchmark of soulful commentary from a black man’s experience which can be related to across the globe. Its spirit and honesty remain potent to this very day." Noel McKoy
