Baelo Claudia
During one of my walks at the archaeological site of Baelo Claudia and, as always, moved by a desire to plastically investigate everything that surrounds me, a Roman times poetry book bought at the same place, fell into my hands.
In that privileged environment, surrounded by nature, history and just beside the sea-our sea-, Catulo´s poems became the key piece that I had been looking for to begin to weave together my next exhibition project.
"Pedes in terra ad sidera visus" (with the feet on the ground and the eyes in the sky, from Latin) is the title I have chosen to gather these works together, the fruits of my research work on Baelo Claudia.
Baelo studies I
This project is composed of works of various formats and supports, through which I intend to capture my vision, or rather my perception...
...the sensations arising on me from contact with this archaeological site, which is so close to me and to my own history...
...this light of our land, which was chosen by the Romans back in the 2nd century BC to set up one their cities. These blue colors, so characteristically Mediterranean, are also much present through my work.
Baelo studies II
Verses of Catullus
I was born in Algeciras. Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Seville in 1999 and settled in Tarifa since my return from Berlin in 2010, this time I direct my research as a painter again to a subject that I am passionate about; the poetry.
This unique and wonderful context that is Baelo Claudia gives me more than enough reasons to continue investigating those textures of old papers, of ocher, of the whites that characterize my work in some way.
Punta Paloma aqueduct
That aqueduct of Punta Paloma as a clear referent to the passage of time. which I sketch and paint several times as the protagonist of a dialogue between the past and the present... Those arches...
Remains of Rome I
That beautiful theater still standing, (where we can still enjoy the privilege of seeing musical and theatrical performances)...

...those columns that supported temples...

...those amphoras that used to carry garum...

As I read and underline with paint the words of Catulus, I like imagining him sitting down on some step of the theater, or on the shore of the beach of Bolonia...
Adrift...
"...and you sit adrift, like a little boat, surprised in the immense sea by a storm of winds." (Catulo)
