Conservation in action

We deliver conservation programmes for over 100 threatened species through landscape-scale and community projects and through the management of our 36 nature reserves.

Conservation projects across the UK

Colonies of butterflies surviving in small isolated pockets of land are vulnerable. Research has shown that they can be encouraged to spread their wings and expand but only if they don't have to fly too far.

Butterfly Conservation projects focus on some of our most threatened butterflies and moths, they are often identified as priorities for conserving biodiversity by governments. 

Saving the Large Blue

In a project working with the National Trust and other conservation organisations we worked to bring back the Large Blue butterfly to areas including Gloucestershire and Somerset, with amazing results!

All the Moor Butterflies

Over the course of 3 years, the All the Moor Butterflies project improved habitat conditions and raised awareness of six of our most threatened butterfly and moth species on Exmoor, Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor. The project worked with 146 landowners across 201 sites.

Cooperation Across Borders project in NI

The five-year EU- funded Co-operation Across Borders for Biodiversity (CABB) project spans Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Scotland and will work to improve habitats for birds, butterflies and other species.

Bringing back the Barberry Carpet moth

As part of a pioneering conservation project called Back from the Brink (funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund) wildlife charity Butterfly Conservation worked with an array of partners to boost the habitat for this specialist moth where it still survives.
